Our collaboration with Basil Bangs…

It’s no secret that we’re both long time admirers of the iconic Australian brand, Basil Bangs—so when the opportunity to collaborate with them arose, we immediately picked up our paintbrushes!

Our artwork for the collaboration was based on the beautiful Stenocarpus sinuatus, commonly known as the Firewheel Tree. The stunning flowers, buds, foliage and seed pods offered up wonderful inspiration when painting the motifs.

We both sketch and paint the motifs, then scan and refine the individual illustrations before bringing them together into a repeat pattern.

The dusky pea flowers were a late inclusion in the pattern composition, these were inspired by the beautiful sprawling hardenbergia violacea—with a bit of an artistic colour license!

We usually take it in turns working on the file—this is exciting and slightly unpredictable because you never know where each other will take it!
