The story of Sea Meadow

A weekend trip on Wathaurong Country (Point Lonsdale, Victoria) created a memorable day and a new appreciation for marine plants. The beautiful algae, kelp, sea lettuce and red seaweed on display that sunny Spring day, inspired our Sea Meadow pattern from our By The Sea collection. We referenced the names of the marine plants discovered using this resource from Port Phillip Heads Marine National Park.

The gentle water ripples creating beautiful crystallised effects on the red seaweed (Jania rosea) and sea nymph (Amphibolis antarctica).

The vibrant green and translucent frilly form of sea lettuce (Ulva australis) dances so beautifully underwater. The soft deep rose, coral and green colours of the marine plants were so stunning against the bright bleached sand and rocks.

The soft pom pom shape of the red seaweed growing along the long strands of the sea nymph fronds sparked an idea of how to capture the stunning underwater display.

Shapes and forms inspired by the marine plants were sketched in pencil and elements of the the red seaweed, sea nymph and the sea lettuce were hand painted in watercolour. These watercolour motifs were scanned and digitally enhanced in an ethereal pastel theme to create our Sea Meadow original artwork.
